“Serving The Next Generation” by Guest Writer: Rachael Adams

Since having my children, I hadn’t had a girls’ trip away, so I was grateful to travel with a group of women from MOPS (Mothers Of Preschoolers). I couldn’t wait to stay up late, eat what I wanted, and talk with my friends so I could return to my family rejuvenated and ready to serve them again.

With no midnight cries to disrupt my slumber, I woke up early to the sunrise peeking over the mountains. Slippers on my feet and Bible in hand, I nestled comfortably into the wooden rocker on the porch, ready for some much-needed quiet time with the Lord. 

Most of the other moms were taking advantage of the same beautiful view and quiet. So, I was surprised when one of the MOPS mentors approached me with a coffee pot and a mug. “Would you like a cup?” she asked with a smile.

Mind you, she was also at the cabin for a relaxing getaway. I’m sure she would have loved to be served, yet she chose to serve us younger mothers. This act of servanthood still reverberates in my mind a decade later, and it reminds me of how Jesus demonstrated servanthood.

For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. John 13:15. ESV

At the last supper, when Jesus washed His disciples’ feet, He told them to “do as I have done for you” (John 13:15). But upon closer examination of our lives, I wonder how often we are the ones putting our feet up to be washed rather than tying the towel around our waist and kneeling in front of our loved ones to serve them. 

Today, I’m the same age the woman who served me coffee was that morning ten years ago. It’s my turn to serve in this capacity. And as I think back upon the mentor mom at the mountaintop getaway, I realize it wasn’t anything she necessarily said that has stuck with me. Instead, it was the humility and heart behind her actions that have left their mark. 

I’m challenged to consider those who may be a generation behind me and what they might need from me. Could it be as simple as serving them in a way that rejuvenates and breathes life into their weary souls? 

Jesus modeled servanthood all the way to the cross. Beforehand He prayed to the Father, “Take this cup from me, but not as I will as you will” (Luke 22:42). 

He is our forever mentor who we try our best to imitate. May we look to Him to teach us first and to fill up our cup. Then can offer His love and fill up the cups of those who may be feeling empty around us.

So today friend, this is me offering a cup of refreshment to you. Who is God leading you to offer one to?
