Let’s face it, Sister, when we step out the front door, we want to feel the freedom to inhale and exhale without being held back by the criticisms and judgement of onlookers. Perhaps it’s the performance driven nature of this (slowly) recovering people pleaser.
But a good number of us (please don’t let me stand alone in this) want to be liked. Wanted. Accepted. And at times, we do goofy things to ‘earn’ the approval of others. Sounds ridiculous, I admit. Especially as I write this out to you in real time. But I’ve done some of those embarrassing somersaults and backflips just to be accepted. Because no one likes the thought of being rejected.
And in the aftermath of wiping the egg off our faces, while vowing never to do _________________ (you fill in the blank) — again (notice that nagging word that leaves us red-faced) — no sooner do we perform another facepalm moment.
A moment that could result in people walking away. A moment that may be the explosive event that rocks your world. A moment you may find yourself very lonely, afraid and deserted.
This song reminds me that there is only One Person that wouldn’t consider the thought of abandoning you or me. His love for us is not affected by our performance (or lack thereof). It is totally and unequivocally solid. Constant. Unconditional.
Even when we’re the ones who do the walking away.
Let that sit with you while you listen to this song. Allow the words to soak in and stir your soul and renew your mind.
The only somersaults and backflips should be from the realization that Jesus loves you unconditionally.
4 But God’s mercy is great, and he loved us very much. 5 Though we were spiritually dead because of the things we did against God, he gave us new life with Christ. You have been saved by God’s grace. Ephesians 2:4-5 NCV
