Lift Your Spirit – “Psalm 23”

The Lord the Shepherd

A psalm of David.

23 The Lord is my shepherd;
    I have everything I need.
He lets me rest in green pastures.
    He leads me to calm water.
He gives me new strength.
He leads me on paths that are right
    for the good of his name.
Even
if I walk through a very dark valley,
    I will not be afraid,
because you are with me.
    Your rod and your shepherd’s staff comfort me.

You prepare a meal for me
    in front of my enemies.
You pour oil of blessing on my head;
    you fill my cup to overflowing.
Surely your goodness and love will be with me
    all my life,
and I will live in the house of the Lord forever. Psalm 23 NCV

This beloved Psalm penned by king David speaks volumes of the loving heart of GOD. As human as the rest of us, David’s expressive words articulate a man who is in absolute awe at the all encompassing love of GOD as his comforter, protector, provider, defender …

Even in the days when I was not in relationship with the Lord as I am today, the twenty-third psalm was “out there” in front of me, but it was just words on paper. I would hear ministers and godly people preach from it, quote it, comment on it, refer to it … but again, it was all just spoken words, a recitation that I had considered to be “nice.”

Today, this collection of words have become praise and adoration for the GOD who is all of those characteristics that king David describes and attributes to Him. In this moment, the Shepherd of my soul is everything that my soul could possibly need and want, and beyond.

The tender rendition as sung by Phil Wickham and Tiffany Hudson just seem to hit the spot for me today out of a deep heart of gratitude. This is one of those songs that fills in the blanks for me when I feel like I can’t find the right words to lace together to lift up to my Shepherd. And maybe it will be a song for you as well.
