When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. If someone told you that something phenomenal was on its way, you’d certainly want to be in on all the details ~ because we are creatures that don’t want to miss out. Just the mere mention of ‘get ready for this’ our ears are perked, our hearts are racing, and our eyes are wide with wonder. And we don’t even know what we’re looking for!
15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. John 14:15-17 NIV
I’m sure that Jesus’ disciples were experiencing some major mental gymnastics when He spoke these words to them. All in the same breath as His words of departure, He tells them ‘someone’ is on His way to help them, but there will be conflict with the world because He will be rejected (just as Jesus was) by the world. And yet, this Person was going to remain with them (and all Believers after them), help them to navigate through life and to comfort them.
Can we just soak that up for a moment? It’s astounding, quite honestly ~ but that’s GOD. He does the most remarkable and unexpected things that it will always leave us jaw-dropped. And we don’t have to have it all figured out, Friend. That’s where our faith kicks us into gear and gets us out of park.
GOD. Never. Leaves. Us.
Come and take a prayer and praise break for a few minutes. Silence the noise of your screaming schedule. Close your calendars and mute the notifications on your phone. It will all be there when you return. And the sky won’t fall before that.
Be still and just know He is GOD. Let the Holy Spirit whisper into your soul and receive His comfort, peace, and calm. Whatever is ailing your heart right now, open up those walls that have been built around the issues that you’ve been containing and trying to hide ~ and let Him have His way with all of it.
