I have stored up your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:11 ESV
Fasten them on your heart forever.
Hang them around your neck. Proverbs 6:21 GWT
Take these words of mine to heart and keep them in mind. Write them down, tie them around your wrist, and wear them as headbands as a reminder. Deuteronomy 11:18 GWT
In times of trouble, we all could use a quick reminder that GOD is near. But those passing cars with the Jesus loves you bumpersticker doesn’t ride up to your window. And it’s not always possible to pop up your favorite podcast sermon and start listening to it.
I can tell you from experience that the best remedy for conquering chaos and calming a storm is by remembering GOD’s promises. The way to do that is by memorizing Scripture and understanding the power of what you’re reciting.
Perhaps you’re thinking that your memory bank is full or you’re not good at remembering a string of words. I get it. With all the passwords and user ID codes, we’re just bursting at the seams for more cerebral ram. However, when you take it slow, one bite (not giga or mega) at a time (a short cluster of words at a time), it truly is possible.
One way is to sing or hum Scripture in song. Find one that you like and commit to singing it to yourself when you’re worshipping and praising GOD. Save it in your playlist. Play it as you take a long drive and sing-a-long. There’s going to come a time when suddenly you are humming that tune and your ears will hear those words and calm you in a situation.
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light to my path. Psalm 119:105 ESV
This song is an example of one of those songs I learned and still cling to ~ especially in times of confusion and decision-making. It’s one of the easiest ways to preach to yourself. It’s also the best way to stay focused and not travel off on a tangent of wrong-way thoughts that derail your emotions.
In a culture of quick and easy access to so many resources at our fingertips, I still find that if we commit our energies to the right resources, we are less likely to find a path to the wrong ones.
My all time favorite method is to select shorter verses. After all, to have a collection of short verses in my heart and mind is better than none at all. I can then treat them like a library of promises and pull the right one out when things around me are going sideways.
Remember: you have to upload the right stuff to your mind then download it into your heart. Not the other way around. That’s the important first step in the daily transformation of our minds: renewing it by a washing of The Word.
Let me challenge you, Friend, to take that step. You have everything that GOD has to offer you to gain. And above all, you’ll come to a place of greater understanding of Who He is and who you are in Him. These treasures will pour peace over you when you need it most.
I love you to Heaven and Back, Girlfriend ~
