“It’s That Time of Year”~ OneDown

16 But Jesus called the infants to him and said, “Don’t stop the children from coming to me! Children like these are part of God’s kingdom. Luke 18:16 GWT

There’s something about the innocent smile of a child and hearing her voice in song.

This is not a traditional Christmas song ~ it’s not even a “church” song. But it is a song that brings a community together through children, their voices, and traditions that they know well.

I think we lose some of that simplicity as we get older.

Christmas is the most celebrated and well-loved holiday of the year in the Philippines. So much, that the party begins in August. The streets will be lined and decked with lamp post tinsel, the Christmas music is playing in the stores, decorations are being sold by all local merchants. They say they want to fully enjoy their favorite holiday, so they dedicate a full quarter of the year (plus) to it. That’s what I call a party!

Shouldn’t we all be living out the celebration of Christmas for much longer than two weeks … thirty days …? After all, Jesus is Who we are centering our conversations around and talking about. And He didn’t just make a cameo appearance and leave. He came to live among us. Immanuel.

These children in the video do not have much in the form of possessions. In fact, they attend school as a recipient of non-profit efforts. They understand the blessing of others and are grateful to be in their school.

Jesus told the adults He came in contact with to become like one of these. Not vying for status, not seeking to have a grand and memorable image, not competing for economic recognition, not even fighting for space and territory, and certainly not wanting to dominate over others. Innocence. Purity. Childlike faith.

Perhaps this is a moment to consider simplifying your Christmas celebration. Finding the sweetness of family, friends, traditions, and gatherings ~ those things which are priceless.
