5 Then I said, “Please, O Lord God of heaven, great and awesome God, who keeps his loving covenant with those who love him and obey his commandments, Nehemiah 1:5 NET
This is one of those songs that I will forever remember. It was a song I learned when I began to really dive into my relationship with the Lord on a “fully conscious” level. Let me explain.
When I came to the Lord in my late teens, I was swept up in the Jesus Movement of the day, but wasn’t fully anchored in my faith as I am today. I went to church, participated in small group studies, but didn’t have the mindset of full immersion into the Scriptures to really begin understanding Who Jesus is and what that meant to my identity in Him.
You see, it does matter that you understand the scope of what you say you believe. The theology that undergirds your faith makes your trust in GOD distinctive from your beliefs in superficial aspects of life. Truth will always prevail because it remains constant. And Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
This song is like a personal ‘anthem’ (if you will) for me, a proclamation of my commitment to having a known relationship with the Savior of my soul.
While GOD is sovereign and mighty, He reaches down and loves us right where we are, in the condition that we’re in as we reach up to Him. Messy, broken, and shattered … all the more He comes near. But His reach does not change Who He is, nor does it diminish what He is capable of doing in, through, and for us.
This worship song was one of those songs that resonated for me in that season of learning and embracing the Person of Jesus because it speaks of His Character and helps me to raise praise.
For those of you who can remember this timeless song, I invite you here and now to join me.
I love you to Heaven and Back, Girlfriend ~
