Some of us have wonderful memories of singing those ol’ hymns of the faith (as they’re often referred to) in days gone by. Those familiar lyrics, many of which taught us Scripture verses, as that’s where they originated — straight from the pages of the Bible.
As times have certainly changed the way we sing praise music and even the songs themselves, there’s still that sacred feeling of those meaningful songs that played maybe in the backdrop of our surrender to Christ … maybe they were sung while we knelt at the altar or walked forward to be prayed for as we received salvation.
I can personally recall the songs that were popular during the times of the outpouring of the Spirit during the charismatic renewal decades ago. That was when I came to know Jesus. And like solid relationships, it grew and changed over the years. Just like the praise music has developed, so should our relationship with the Lord. We were never meant to remain the same. He changes us. His Word changes us. His Presence changes us.
In those very beginning moments, like a child that takes her first few steps, it’s wonky at best — but it gets better and stronger. That ‘place’ of new beginnings — whether it was in the living room of your apartment, in the sanctuary of a church, at a ginormous crusade, or on the city sidewalk … that was the holy ground where GOD met you.
Maybe we need to visit that ol’ basement — that ‘place’ of beginnings — to rekindle the spark that ignited a new life. Could it be that this is the day of renewal for you, Friend? Accept the invitation to return to that first surrender — and begin again. It’s okay. GOD will still meet you there with open Arms — just as He did the first time.
