Sarah’s faith embraced God’s miracle power to conceive even though she was barren and was past the age of childbearing, for the authority of her faith rested in the One who made the promise, and she tapped into his faithfulness. Hebrews 11:11 The Passion Translation
One day, I found myself in the seat of surveying what was and where I felt GOD was calling me to be. My heart wanted what GOD was whispering to me, but I felt so unequipped and inadequate for the task. Can anyone relate? Moreover, I was a tad bit impatient about the waiting time. *facepalm*
As I turned to the Word for some wisdom, I kept coming back to faith-inducing Scripture verses. This one above seemed to leap off the fragile page of my Bible; it’s one of those chapters that has numerous highlights and notes inscribed in the margins.
When I read about the heroism of the ancients and what they lived out, is it much different from what we live today? Fear, humiliation, judgement, condemnation, gossip, alienation, isolation — I guess somethings just don’t change, even with time. Sarah was barren when it came to motherhood. In her day, that was the equivalent of being disgraced as a woman. Bringing children into the world was considered the crowning of a woman. Today, it may be likened to a lucrative career, successful marriage, educational achievements, having children who are corporate successes, living in the suburban dream home … you can add to the list.
Barren. That’s a word that can transcend all space and time. We can feel barren in our work, our homes, our dreams, our goals, our relationships, our projects … Wherever we feel less-than or unaccomplished … lacking or unequal … deficient or incompetent. It’s a word that the world uses to judge us according to its standards.
But GOD …
Those are all the gaps and spaces where GOD has already filled in and completed us. He transforms us from those places of brokenness and shame and shows His healing and restoration through us — if we will let Him.
Trusting GOD with our future — believing that who He says we are is ‘enough’ to accomplish anything He has planned for us to be part of — should be well, enough in itself. But we humans are so easily dissatisfied with where our feet are currently standing. And tomorrow there will be yet something else for us to complain about. So fickle!
Let’s look back through the lens of Sister Sarah in the Scripture in Hebrews. It says that her faith embraced GOD’s miracle power to make things happen — to essentially bring to fruition what He promised.
Are we embracing what He has whispered to us will ultimately come into being? Do we truly believe GOD will fulfill His Word in us? That may challenge us if we let it percolate for just little bit.
Is worldly skepticism crowding out the fire of faith that once burned when we first believed that Jesus actually died for us — individually?
