Thankful Thursday

They say there are herbs and certain foods that can help increase our memory. I have to chuckle because in my attempt to do personal ‘research’ on the validity of such things, I forget to include them in my activity! But that doesn’t prevent me from the pursuit.

I’m finding that I’m in that season of life where it just suits me best if I write things down — on paper, in my phone notes, little stickies on my desk … and that goes for everything. Either I’m going to remember it all by cerebral power, or I’m going to forget it all by my weak human nature. Yes, it’s a job unto itself. We all have names for it: midlife forgetfulness, hormonal hiccup, brain pause, cerebral overload … you can add yours here _________________.

The good news is that GOD doesn’t function as we do (thank you, GOD). What He commits to, He follows through without our help to remind Him.

But God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the livestock that were with him in the ark. And God made a wind blow over the earth, and the waters subsided. Genesis 8:1 ESV

So it was that, when God destroyed the cities of the valley, God remembered Abraham and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow when he overthrew the cities in which Lot had lived. Genesis 19:29 ESV

Then God remembered Rachel’s plight and answered her prayers by enabling her to have children. Genesis 30:22 NIV

God heard their groaning, and he remembered his covenant promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Exodus 2:24 NLT

We are a generation that is so blessed to have this Written Word of GOD at our fingertips — in a multitude of translations and in just as many formats. These are ways in which we can be reminded of the loving faithfulness of our Lord as seen in times past. And He continues to work for us now, just as He did in those days.

My ambitious self wants to be all up in the business of helping GOD orchestrate how things should roll out. Reminding Him that if He acted by such and such a time, that this and that will fall into place smoothly and allow for me to execute my plans. My plans. Hello? When did GOD hand me the director’s clipboard and the mic?

Knowing that GOD is trustworthy, He doesn’t need me to tap Him on the shoulder to remind Him of His Promises. I need to remember that my responsibility is to obey what He has established. Period.

When GOD remembers, He takes action. How and when He takes action is what we wait for in faith — not doubting.

What I am learning in Scripture is that when we are called to remember something, it is generally what GOD has already given us — His precepts, commands, principles for living. Once we have followed through on our part, everything else falls into place. It’s when we think we should be involved in the ‘extracurricular activities’ that things go awry. We start adding and subtracting in ways that were never meant to be.

This day I am thankful that GOD remembers me and all that He has purposed for me is already set into place. He is in the details.

In what ways are you hoping that GOD will remember you in your situation?

Does it feel as though GOD has forgotten you?

Have you reached out to other believers that can rally around you in prayer for your need?

“Father GOD, I thank You for Your faithfulness and Your proven trustworthiness. Time and after time, even when I fail to utter a simple ‘thank you,’ You bless me abundantly. You know the season that I am sitting in, Lord. You have kept a watchful eye on me throughout and have never left me. Day after day, Your loving Hand keeps me safe and protected. I admit that I grow weary and anxious, wondering how much longer I must remain here. But You are with me, and remembering that settles my soul. Increase my faith where it falters. Give me Your Strength and Courage to keep believing in Your Perfect Will. In Jesus’ Name, AMEN.”

One last thing, Friend, in the prayer above, insert YOUR NAME wherever you see ‘I,‘ me’ or ‘my.’ Let that reset your mind and focus on remembering that GOD has not forgotten you.

I love you to Heaven and Back, Girlfriend ~~
