Rushed out of Egypt. Protected from Pharoah’s army. Led on dry land from one side of the Red Sea to the other. Provided bread from heaven and water from a rock. Warmed and led by a pillar of smoke by night. Cooled and led by a pillar of cloud by day.
The Israelites wandered in the wilderness with God.
Sinners following a holy God.
God instructed the Israelites to build a movable tabernacle that was to be the temporary dwelling place for the ark of the covenant and other items used in the sacrifices and worship of Him. He equipped skilled craftsmen to create the tabernacle and the items in it.
A veil, or curtain, stood between the Holy Place and the Holy of Holies where the ark of the covenant stood with God’s presence in the cloud above the ark’s mercy seat. Images of cherubim were worked into the veil made of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn and finely twisted linen.

The veil covered the ark of the covenant when the Israelites moved to different locations.
Only one man who had meticulously and ritually purified himself could enter the Holy of Holies through the veil … the High Priest on the Day of Atonement. There, he offered sin and burnt offerings to the Lord to cover the sins of the Israelites.
Centuries passed, and the veil stood between the world and our Holy God.

Then the Word became flesh and dwelt among men and women. He was tempted as we are, but He did not sin. He taught that the kingdom of heaven was at hand. Jesus healed all who came to Him, raised the dead, calmed the seas and winds, multiplied fish and bread, and much more.
Holiness veiled in flesh.
And sinners ripped that flesh open, crowned His head with thorns, beat Him with rods, mocked Him, and hung Him on a cross to die.
And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, Matthew 27:50-51 NKJV
From top to bottom, heaven split the veil that separated men and women from God. Many believe that the veil in Herod’s temple during Jesus’ day was about 4 inches thick and 60 feet high. Impossible to tear. But God.
“Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, and having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water,” Hebrews 10:19-22 NKJV
Direct access into the Holy of Holies. Direct access to God. Jesus entered the Holy of Holies with His blood sacrifice, a sacrifice that paid for your sins, my sins, and the sins of the world for eternity: past, present, and future.
Jesus gave us a new and living way.
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. John 14:6 NKJV
We walk through the veil that is His flesh, for He is our High Priest Who has cleansed us.

Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. Matthew 26:26-28 ESV
As we remember what Jesus has done for us, we take the bread and remember His flesh ripped open, the torn veil; we drink the cup and consider His blood of the new covenant. We enter the Holy of Holies and bow before our High Priest and thank Him that we are one with Him.
“Christ died, to rend all dividing veils, and to make all his one,”
MATTHEW HENRY
Holy, Holy, Holy, are You, Lord God, Almighty. From before the foundations of the world, You created every detail to point to Your holiness, mercy, grace, and lovingkindness. We broke Your laws and Your heart. The chasm between Your holiness and our sinfulness was high, deep, and wide, like the veil that kept us from Your presence. But through the veil of Jesus’ flesh and His blood sacrifice, You empowered us to come boldly into Your presence forever! We give You our lives and our humble thanksgiving. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Will you enter through the Holy Veil?
