In the United States of America today is Valentine’s Day. As most people know it as one of the biggest celebrations in the calendar year, it is expressed in a myriad of ways. Some folks fuss over their spouses, loved ones, significant others, pets, coworkers, close friends … oh, the list can be endless and so are the ways in which this is carried out.
The universal symbol ❤️ is seen everywhere and created by bright balloons, flower petals, crayon renderings, magnets on the refrigerator … everywhere and anywhere that you want that special someone to know they are well loved.
Giving our ❤️ to those whom we trust — that’s where the guarding comes alive. We don’t guard with the intention to block others out, but rather to protect what is treasured and valuable.
Guard your heart more than anything else,
because the source of your life flows from it. Proverbs 4:23 GWT
Our very lives depend upon us protecting our hearts. GOD designed us so that we would have an open heart towards Him and remain in relationship with Him. When we protect what actually belongs to Him, it honors Him and preserves our relationship with Him. We are least likely to give our ❤️ away to anything that falsely promises to fill our deepest longings.
If our ❤️ is right with GOD, we will have the best relationships with our neighbors. Living life with our eyes open to see who needs us (as well as whom we need) will enable us to do life with sincerity and integrity. Treating others the way GOD desires proves we are His Children.
So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. Matthew 7:12 NIV
Respecting myself will be evidence that I cherish what GOD cherishes. He sent His only Son for my sake. For your sake. For the sins of the world. At the very least, I must respect what He considers to be worth the Blood of Jesus.
Protecting valuables. Our ❤️ is valuable. With it we worship and have relationship with our Creator GOD. From it our lives take shape and we grow and mature into the persons we were meant to be. In it, we store up the treasures, gifts and talents He wants us to have so we can live our best life.
On this Valentine’s Day, let’s examine how we guard our ❤️ as we look to take inventory of what is in it and Who fills it.
37 Jesus answered him, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the greatest and most important commandment. 39 The second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.’ 40 All of Moses’ Teachings and the Prophets depend on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:36-40 GWT
